Monthly "Afternoon at the Lagoon" Marine Science Programs for Indian River County Students to be Presented at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution, Beginning January 2000


FT. PIERCE, FL —Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution, Inc., a world leader in marine discovery and technology is proud to introduce a unique afterschool program designed for Indian River County students ages 8-14 entitled, "Afternoon at the Lagoon". Geared to take advantage of the Wednesday afternoon early dismissal of Indian River County Students, the campus of Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution (HBOI) will host field courses on the second Wednesday of each month, beginning in January 2000. These courses, developed by Harbor Branch’s Marine Education Division, will present students with the opportunity to experience firsthand the wonder and diversity of the East Central Florida Coast. Cost for the five program series is $50 per student. Space is limited, so please register early by calling (772) 465-2400 extension 500. Registration deadline is January 5, 2000.

The classes will run from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on the following schedule:

January 12, 2000: Indian River Lagoon Boat Excursion

February 9, 2000: Aquatic Adventures

March 8, 2000: Oceanography / Plankton Biology

April 12, 2000: Incredible Invertebrates

May 10, 2000: Florida’s Fragile Habitats
