HARBOR BRANCH SCIENTIST WINS CONSERVATION AWARD

DR. BRIAN LAPOINTE RECOGNIZED FOR CORAL REEF RESEARCH

FORT PIERCE, FLA., May 4, 2001 - Dr. Brian Lapointe, a Senior Scientist in the Marine Science Division at HARBOR BRANCH Oceanographic Institution, has been awarded the "Environmental Science Award for 2000" by the Conservation Alliance of St. Lucie County.

The Alliance said Dr. Lapointe's "outstanding job" in the area of water-quality and the loss of coral reef habitat was the reason he was chosen for the honor.

Dr. Lapointe said he was surprised but pleased to learn the Conservation Alliance of St. Lucie County was recognizing his work.

"They took a look at what we're learning about the causes of diminishing water-quality in our marine environment and what it's doing to our coral reefs, and were alarmed at what they saw," Dr. Lapointe said.

The Conservation Alliance of St. Lucie County presented the award at a luncheon in Jensen Beach on Saturday, May 5th.
