Jan. 21/02 - "DINNER WITH A SCIENTIST" TO BE OFFERED AT HARBOR BRANCH'S NEXT LECTURE

FORT PIERCE, FL - Dine with a scientist and hear about Florida's tides. Dr. Ned Smith, Senior Scientist and Head of the Physical Oceanography Department at HARBOR BRANCH, will speak on "Tides R Us" on Wednesday, January 30, at 4:00 and 7:00 PM in the Johnson Marine Education Center. Between lectures, there will be an opportunity to join Dr. Smith for dinner and talk to him one-on-one. The dinner will be held at the Johnson Marine Education Center and will include a full-course seafood supper, wine, and lecture. Cost of the dinner is $25 per person. Reservations are required for the dinner.

For those who wish to attend only the lecture, cost of admission is $5.00 for the general public. HARBOR BRANCH associates, volunteers, employees and students receive free admission.

Ocean tides affect those of us living along the coast in several ways, but the nature of the tide varies significantly along the coast of Florida. Dr. Smith will talk about how tides differ, what actually are "wind tides" and how tides affect all of us whether we live on the coast or inland.

Dr. Smith was born and raised in upstate Wisconsin, and he received his B.S. and M.S. in meteorology from the University of Wisconsin. Ned was intending to get a Ph.D. in meteorology with an oceanography minor when he took part in a 93-day oceanographic research cruise in the summer of 1968. After zig-zagging across the mid-Atlantic ridge, and with ports of call in Bermuda, the Canary Islands, Senegal and Liberia, he became so enthusiastic about marine science that he reversed his major and minor fields of study. Dr. Smith received his Ph.D. in Oceanography and Limnology in 1972. After working six years at the University of Texas, Ned came to HARBOR BRANCH in 1977.

"Tides R Us" is part of the 2002 Ocean Science Lecture Series, which is organized and put on by HARBOR BRANCH scientists and sponsored by associate members through the Sponsor-a-Scientist Program.
