FORT PIERCE, FL., Feb. 28, 2002 - More than 40 prominent scientists from all over the
U.S. will discuss everything from abrupt changes in the world's climate to how humans
are threatening the survival of many of the world's coral reefs during a special
series of seminars and briefings March 5-6 at HARBOR BRANCH Oceanographic Institution.
The 47th meeting of the Ocean Studies Board under the auspices of the National Academy of Sciences will get underway promptly at 8:30am Tuesday, March 5th, with the topic "Environmental Conditions and Ecosystem Restoration in Florida", which will include a discussion on efforts underway to restore the Florida Everglades. Dr. Dennis Hanisak, Director of Marine Science and Education at HARBOR BRANCH, said the issues involved are of vital interest to people the world over, but especially to people living in Florida because of the ecological and economical importance of our marine resources. "The Ocean Studies Board was established by the National Research Council to advise the federal government on issues of ocean science, engineering, and policy," Dr. Hanisak said. "As such the Board plays a leadership role in helping our policy makers understand the complex and critical issues facing us that involve the marine environment," Dr. Hanisak added. Two HARBOR BRANCH scientists will give key presentations; Dr. Brian Lapointe will speak on "Human Alteration of the Global Nitrogen Cycle: Impacts on Coral Reef Ecosystems", and Dr. Edie Widder will speak on "Bioluminescence: A Tool for Oceanography." The public and the media are welcome to attend any of the sessions through 12:15pm Wednesday, March 6th. However, time is limited, and only one time period on Tuesday is being scheduled during which scientists will be able to meet with the media; from noon to 1pm in the Johnson Education Center. Arrangements to speak individually with any of the scientists must be made through the public relations office at 772.465.2400,
