Harbor Branch to Host Second Annual Florida Farmed Fish Festival


FT. PIERCE, FL The Aquaculture Division at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution will host its Second Annual Florida Farmed Fish Festival on the East Lawn of the Johnson Education Center from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday, December 4, 1999. Admission to the festival is free. This unique family-style event will feature fresh farmed seafood marketed direct to the public by Florida’s shrimp, fish, clam and gator farmers. Anyone interested in buying seafood to take home should bring their own ice cooler. Ice chests may also be purchased on site. Cooking demonstrations by local restaurants (such as Pineapple Joe’s) and culinary schools (such as the Florida Culinary Institute, Pro Chef Catering and Indian River Community College’s Culinary School) will feature Florida farmed fish, as well as clam and shrimp dishes, prepared in a variety of ways. Hands-on presentations such as, "How to grow fish in your own backyard" and "How to fillet a fish" will also be conducted during the course of the festival. The Department of Agriculture and various private nonprofit groups, together with the Smithsonian, Audubon Society, Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program and local artists, will have information booths on site during this special event. There will also be activities for children and live music. Tours of Harbor Branch’s 60-acre Aquaculture Development Park, including its 14,400 square foot technologically advanced Clam Hatchery, will be available throughout the day at a cost of $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 12 and under.

"Last year’s event was a resounding success with attendance estimated at 3,000-5,000 festival-goers," remarks event coordinator, LeRoy Creswell, an assistant scientist with Harbor Branch's’Aquaculture Division, " This year’s event is shaping up to be even larger, with more vendors geared up to sell greater varieties and larger quantities of seafood."
