Blue Planet is the product of a six-year collaboration between The Discovery Channel and The British Broadcasting Corporation. Premiering in January 2002, the first four of this eight-part series narrated by Sir David Attenborough, includes remarkable footage captured from hundreds of locations around the world. In episode four, called "The Deep," you'll see footage from the JOHNSON-SEA-LINK submersibles shot in the depths of Gulf of Mexico and the Bahamas. The real stars of this episode are the bizarre organisms like bioluminescent angler fish found 3000 feet deep and chemosynthetic tubeworms living on cold methane seeps. Many organisms featured in this program are species studied by Drs. Tammy Frank, Edith Widder, Craig Young, and Ph.D. candidate Sandra Brooke of our Division of Marine Science. These researchers served as science consultants on board ship during the filming of this program. Much of the credit for this production goes also to the pilots and crew of the JSL submersibles and the captain and crew of the R/V SEWARD JOHNSON II. Visit Discovery.com to see their spectacular segment devoted to Blue Planet. They'll be adding many articles and images of ocean and marine-animal expeditions around the world, so stay tuned!

PREMIERE BLUE PLANET: SEAS OF LIFE will air in eight parts:

"Ocean World" • "Frozen Seas" • "Open Ocean" • "The Deep"
"Coasts" • "Tidal Seas" • "Coral Seas" • "Seasonal Seas"

From the Imax website:
"Presented by the Smithsonian Institution and Imax Ltd., and using IMAX 3D technology, Galapagos vividly documents an eight-week expedition to the islands and surrounding waters.

Part adventure, part scientific expedition, part personal quest, and part fantastic voyage, this unprecedented non-fiction film takes audiences on a journey with marine biologist Dr. Carole Baldwin, from the Smithsonian Institution's Museum of Natural History, on her first trips to the famed Galapagos Islands.

An amazingly immersive cinematic experience, Galapagos delves deep into the largely unknown waters surrounding the volcanic archipelago to explore the natural wonders of a realm that is truly a living natural science laboratory.

Using Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution's research vessel, the SEWARD JOHNSON as the mother ship-and their high-tech submersible JOHNSON-SEA-LINK-the highly distinguished research and filmmaking team deployed technology light years ahead of the crude instruments Charles Darwin had at his disposal during his famous 1835 visit to the region."
