Training the Next Generation of Marine Scientists: The FAU/HBOI Marine Science Partnership Dr. Dennis Hanisak About the Lecture The Florida Atlantic University/Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution Partnership in Marine Science Research & Education is developing and implementing unique, year-round educational opportunities in marine science for Florida's university students. FAU and HBOI faculty are working together to offer high-quality educational programs in the marine sciences, using the unique resources of the Harbor Branch campus in Fort Pierce. A new, 40,000 sq-ft. joint-use Marine Science Building will be dedicated on November 13, 2006, on the Harbor Branch campus. This new milestone in the partnership provides an opportunity to reflect on its past achievements and future directions. This partnership between a public university and a private research institution developed over a number of years and brings to bear a unique and cost-effective combination of scientific talent, institutional capabilities, and facilities, to a region underrepresented in marine science education. The synergy between FAU and HBOI will result in the world class training of a new generation of creative marine scientists and will equip them as future leaders in environmental research, management, and stewardship, as well as future educators.
