This year the Manatee Bowl (= the East Florida Regional Ocean Sciences Bowl), hosted by Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution (HBOI) and the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, will be held March 3-5, 2006, at HBOI in Fort Pierce, Florida. The Manatee Bowl is one of 25 National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) regional competitions. The competition is designed to test students' knowledge of the ocean. The winners of each regional competition will advance to the national finals, which will be held in Pacific Grove, CA, May 13-15, 2006.

The competition consists of a round-robin/double-elimination format for teams that consist of four students plus one alternate and a coach. The format involves a timed competition of multiple-choice or short-answer questions within the broad category of the oceans. Questions are drawn from scientific and technical disciplines used in studying the oceans (biology, chemistry, physics, geology, technology) as well as from topics on the contributions of the oceans to national and international economics, history, and culture.

Statements of intent will be accepted from interested schools on a first-come, first-served basis through November 30, 2005. Interested coaches (usually a teacher) should contact education@hboi.edu. If you have questions about the nature of the competition itself, or if you wish to obtain resource guides, practice questions, etc., please go to the NOSB website at http://www.nosb.org.
