DAY FIELD TRIPS

"HARBOR BRANCH OVERVIEW"
This program provides a great introduction to Harbor Branch and the Indian River Lagoon (IRL). Students view a short video that highlights the activities and accomplishments of the diverse research and development divisions of Harbor Branch. Next, a behind-the-scenes tour exposes students to the state-of-the-art technology and equipment used by the scientists and engineers at Harbor Branch. An overview of North America's most diverse estuary the Indian River Lagoon, is then presented through a slide show and discussion. Finally, students move to the lab where they will use microscopes and field guides to identify and discuss plankton and other IRL organisms.
• Participation Limit: 12 - 40 students
• Cost: $12/student; teachers/chaperones free

"INDIAN RIVER LAGOON IN DEPTH"
This 4-hour program gives students a more detailed view of Harbor Branch and a "hands-on" look at the Indian River Lagoon. Students begin by viewing our Harbor Branch overview video followed by a behind-the-scenes tour, which includes a close-up look at our ships and subs (when in port). Next, a Harbor Branch instructor will present background and overview of the IRL and estuarine ecology. Students will learn sampling techniques such as seining and sieving while collecting organisms along the IRL shoreline. Finally, students return to the lab to identify and discuss the organisms they collect using microscopes and field guides.
• Participation Limit: 12 - 40 students
• Cost: $14 student; teachers/chaperones free

"INDIAN RIVER EXPLORATION"
This 5-hour program provides the most in-depth look at the work Harbor Branch scientists are performing, and offers the most exciting and informative view of the Indian River Lagoon. In addition to an overview video, behind-the-scenes tour of Harbor Branch, and lecture on the Indian River Lagoon, this program also includes a 1-1/2 hour pontoon boat tour of the river with a stop at one of its many spoil islands where students will sieve and seine for organisms and discuss the local communities. They will then take their "catch" back to the lab and use microscopes and field guides to identify and discuss the organisms.
• Participation Limit: 12 - 36 students
• Cost: $20 student; teachers/chaperones free

MULTI-DAY FIELD TRIPS
The Johnson Education Center at Harbor Branch is available as a year-round field station for visiting college classes and groups. Located on the Indian River lagoon, one of North America's most diverse estuarine systems, Harbor Branch is an ideal field site. Via a 15-passenger van, an inshore pontoon boat, or a 42 foot trawler, students have access to a variety of environments including seagrass meadows, mangrove forests, marsh grass stands, intertidal mud flats, sandy beach shores, high energy beach communities, and inshore and deepwater marine communities.

Our scientific staff, graduate field assistants, well-equipped wet and dry laboratories, laboratory and field collecting gear (view detailed list), boats, modern dormitories in a guarded setting and location make Harbor Branch a unique and complete resource for your field and laboratory needs.

Located in Fort Pierce, Florida, the center is within a day's drive of colleges in South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida and is accessible by air via Melbourne and West Palm Beach.
