INTENSIVE SEAWEED CULTURE

The Seaweed Research Program is managed by Dr. Dennis Hanisak, who also serves as the director of the Marine Science Division at Harbor Branch. The Seaweed Research Program is focused on the cultivation of seaweeds for a number of applications. Pilot-scale feasibility studies are underway, testing the commercial viability of the Harbor Branch-patented G16S strain of Gracilaria. The major interest in this strain is its production of high quality agar, a commercially important polysaccharide with many application in the medical and food industries.
